Cabinet approves Mushtaq Mahar as new Sindh police chief

Mehar is on the eleventh position on the Grade 22’s seniority list and is set to retire on March 3, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has accorded approval to appointing Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar – one of the three names put forward by the Sindh government – as the new provincial inspector general of police. The other two names were Ghulam Qadir Thebo and Dr Kamran Fazal.

According to the sources, through a circular, the federal cabinet notified the appointment of Railways IG Mehar – a Grade 22 officer – as the new Sindh IG.

Mahar is on the eleventh position on the Grade 22’s seniority list and is set to retire on March 3, 2025.

Sources said following Mehar’s appointment, outgoing Sindh IG Kaleem Imam is likely to report to the Establishment Division.

Imam’s replacement comes weeks after Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani accused him of colluding with the opposition parties in Sindh and planting baseless news reports regarding provincial cabinet members in the media.

Imam had denied all such allegations, saying a “big conspiracy” was being staged against him.

However, Prime Minister Imran Khan, during a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah last month at the Governor House, was supportive of his views that any hurdles from the Centre or from other segments of the state to the administrative issues of the province would not only create problems for the working machinery of the whole province but also shake the confidence of the provincial government.

The sources said that Imam is likely to be appointed on one of the two vacant posts – Railways IG or Motorways IG.

Further, the Establishment Division has issued orders for appointing Muhammad Alamgir Chaudhry as the chief executive officer of National Productivity Organisation, Pakistan Administrative Service Grade 20 officer Asif Bilal Lodhi as secretary Wapda Lahore and Asadullah Faiz as joint secretary health.
