Former mayor was 89 at the time of his passing

Former Karachi mayor Naimatullah Khan passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 89 at the time of his passing.

According to Khan's family members, the funeral prayers would be held tomorrow (Wednesday).

Khan was the mayor of Pakistan's largest city from August 2001 to June 2005.

President Arif Alvi expressed his condolences on the passing of former mayor and prayed for the departed soul.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Sindh Governor Imran Ismail also expressed deep sorrow on the death of the former mayor. They also offered condolences to the bereaved family members.

“His efforts in the construction and renovation of Karachi cannot be forgotten,” said the provincial governor.

A lawyer by profession, Khan was the first city nazim under the devolution plan launched by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf and is credited with initiating multiple development projects in the metropolis and starting a bus project in which he imported busses from Sweden.

A long-standing member of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Khan was also the chairperson of an NGO – Alkhidmat Foundation.

Khan had resigned from his post of mayor in June 2005 and was not re-elected in the next local body elections.
