Alia's sister, Shaheen Bhatt opens up about her suicide attempt

"Pain is universal, and happiness is unfortunately not universal," Shaheen Bhatt

Shaheen Bhatt, sister to actor Alia Bhatt, has been pretty vocal about her struggles with mental health - she penned a memoir titled I've Never Been (Un)Happier.

Now in a recent interview, she recalled the time she attempted suicide, reported Hindustan Times.  Appearing on The Tara Sharma Show with her mother and sister, the writer spoke at length about her uphill battle with depression.

When asked what she was thinking when she decided to end her life, Shaheen replied, "I wasn’t thinking. I was just like, I can’t do this anymore. I can’t look out of the window for one more second and feel this empty.”

She had opened up about her personal struggles earlier in an interview with Hindustan Times as well saying, "My entire reasoning for wanting to talk about this is the fact that I honestly, truly believe that even if it’s not mental illness, everyone of us is struggling with some kind of pain. Pain is universal, and happiness is unfortunately not universal."

Shaheen has always been a staunch advocate of discourse around mental illness and echoed the same in her interview. "For me, writing the book was a way of using it as a vehicle, to hopefully spur on the conversation on mental health,” she said.

In the promo for The Tara Sharma Show, Shaheen's mother Soni Razdan also imparted words of wisdom for other parents with a struggling child. "What is very important to tell parents is that you have to look for signs. You have to know what they are and you have to look for them,” she said.
