Legislation on child marriages urged

To prevent child and forced marriages trend and to talk comprehensively on the child marriages prevention bill

PESHAWAR: Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday urged the provincial government to ensure effective legislation for the prevention of child marriages.

A discussion on the prevention of child and forced marriages were organised by the Peshawar University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) and Social Work department of the University of Peshawar in collaboration with UN-Women Pakistan. To prevent child and forced marriages trend and to talk comprehensively on the child marriages prevention bill, presented in the provincial assembly, an extensive discussion took place.

The gathering aims to note down the suggestions and opinions of the educational experts. Dr Muhammad Ibrar from the Social Work Department shared that according to the Health and Demographic Survey of Pakistan for 2017-18, 22.3% of women could not get education due to early child marriages.
