Cabinet gives nod to place Maryam on no-fly list in sugar mills case

Cabinet also allows placing Mian Javed Latif on ECL on NAB's recommendation

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has given the nod to place names of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Maryam Nawaz and Mian Javed Latif in the Exit Control List (ECL), The Express Tribune learnt on Tuesday.

Under the law, the names would be placed by the Ministry of Interior.

The development comes following the federal cabinet's meeting headed by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad earlier in the day.

On Monday, a cabinet sub-committee had recommended the government to place Maryam on no-fly-list in Chaudhry Sugar Mills corruption case.

On the other hand, Latif’s name was recommended by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which is investigating into his alleged misuse of power while making assets worth billions of rupees in the name of his siblings.



Maryam, who has already been on ECL ever since she convicted in the Avenfield corruption reference in 2018, is also accused of money laundering.

She was arrested by the anti-corruption watchdog on August 8, 2019 in a case pertaining to “shady business transactions” at CSM, where she is a major shareholder.

She was granted bail by the Lahore High Court (LHC) in November later that year.

The LHC is set to take up her petition on January 15, in which she has sought to lift her travel ban so that she could visit her ailing father, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, in London.

In the application, Maryam pleaded the court that her father’s health was critical and she was under "explainable stress" because of her inability to be with him at a time when he needed extra care.
