Commuting: Rawalpindi roads to get a makeover

After years of waiting, dilapidated roads in Rawalpindi are to get a makeover-the Punjab government has allotted Rs440 million for road improvements in 2011-12.


Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Zahid Saeed said that Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif has provided a package of Rs440 million for the construction and rehabilitation of roads in Rawalpindi district during a meeting here on Tuesday.

He added that one road each in Jhelum, Chakwal and Attock districts will also be repaired.

Saeed said that the summary of these recommendations, once approved by members of provincial assembly (MPAs), would be sent to Punjab CM for final approval.

He added that the CM had also given approval of reconstruction and rehabilitation of two roads in Murree during his last visit. These roads are: Bansra Gali to Jheeka Gali Road and Lower Topa to Patriata Road.

The commissioner was presiding over a joint meeting of Punjab assembly members from Rawalpindi division and officers of Punjab Highway Authority (PHA).

The meeting was attended by Political Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister and MPA Sarfraz Afzal. Other MPAs at the meeting include Sheryar Riaz, Malik Ghulam Raza, Raja Fayyaz Sarwar, Ziaullah Shah, Begum Iffat Liaquat Ali Khan (Chakwal), Mehr Muhammad Fayyaz (Jhelum), PML (N) Leader Ch Umer Farooq, Chief Engineer Punjab Masudur Rasool, Rawalpindi Highways Subdivisional Engineer Malik Munir and XENs of PHA of all districts.
