HYDERABAD:
Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister on Universities and Boards Nisar Khuhro has been approached with a proposal for establishing a general university in Larkana. During Khuhro's visit to the University of Sindh's (SU's) Larkana campus on Thursday, campus focal person Professor Azhar Ali Shah requested him to table and enact the University of Larkano Act, 2020, in this regard.

According to Shah, the proposal suggests that SU's Larkana campus be upgraded to a general university, which will be named after the city. He reminded the adviser that the Pakistan Peoples Party-led provincial government had earlier envisaged establishing such a university in Larkana in 2009.

Teachers, staff clamour for removal of SU VC

The SU had established a campus in Larkana in 2013, in a building temporarily borrowed from Government Arts and Commerce College. Shah said the campus faced a shortage of classrooms, offices, accommodation and other facilities until recently, when it was moved to the new campus building.

Currently, the campus is offering only three bachelor's degree programmes including BS English Language and Literature, BS Computer Science and Business Administration. "[However], there is a high demand for other faculties and disciplines related to all subjects of natural sciences, social sciences, education and law," Shah added.

According to Shah, Khuhro has assured him that he will take up the matter for upgrading the campus to a university.
