Charged for blasphemy : HRCP condemns death of convict
The HRCP said the death was a result of abuse of the blasphemy law and flaws in the prison system.
LAHORE:
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Monday condemned the death of a blasphemy convict at the Lahore Camp Jail. A prisoner, Shaukat Ali, 35, died at Services Hospital in Lahore on Sunday morning after what police said was a brief ailment. His family rejected the claims of the police and said he must have died of some other reason. Ali, arrested in January 2007, was mentally challenged, his family and some police officials said. However, the condition had not been medically proven. “He was said to be a mentally challenged person, but was denied psychiatric treatment,” the HRCP said. The HRCP said the death was a result of abuse of the blasphemy law and flaws in the prison system.
