Speakers urge people to adopt birth spacing

Representatives of government departments, NGOs explained the benefits of birth spacing

RAWALPINDI: Healthy mothers and healthy children will help in formation of a healthy society, said speakers at a a seminar organised by Rawalpindi Population Welfare Department to raise awareness about problems arising from unbridled population growth.

Representatives of government departments, NGOs including District Population Welfare Officer Shireen Sukhan, Child Specialist Dr Ehsan, Maulana Muhammad Ali Qureshi, Population Welfare Officers Rana Azhar Mahmood, Ahmad Khan, Tariq Aziz, and Munir Ahmed explained the benefits of birth spacing.

Sukhan said that the rapidly growing population had become a major problem for the country and it had impeded its progress putting pressure on limited resources.

Maulana Qureshi said a single child raised well by the parents would become a useful citizen for the society. He called for giving healthy children to Ummah. Well nourished, educated and healthy children were bound to make the Muslim Ummah stronger, Qureshi said stressing on birth spacing during time that women breastfeed the children.

Dr Ehsan said that it was important for a child's health that he was raised in a careful manner and this could only be done if a mother stays healthy.
