Boris Johnson wins major victory in UK elections

Britain’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson secured a crushing victory in the UK’s general election as voters backed his promise to “get Brexit done” and take the country out of the European Union by 31 January next year. Johnson’s Conservatives captured 364 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons with all bar one seat counted, a comfortable majority of 74 and the party’s best showing in a parliamentary election since Margaret Thatcher triumphed in 1987. He addressed the nation in London, saying Brexit was now the “irrefutable, irresistible, unarguable decision of the British people” and promising those who lent their vote to the Tories in traditional Labour areas: “I will not let you down.”

Akshay Kumar apologises for accidentally liking tweet mocking Jamia Milia protests

More than 100 students and activists protesting against the contentious Indian citizenship law were injured in New Delhi last week. The unarmed protesters clashed with the police that used tear gas and baton charges to disperse demonstrators at a major university. Following this, several Bollywood celebrities lashed out at the authorities over the tension in Delhi’s Jamia Milia Islamia University. However, Twitterati noticed that Akshay Kumar had liked a video that mocked the attack on Jamia, and propagated hatred. Akshay Kumar landed himself in controversy as he did not refrain from calling him a ‘videshi – foreigner’ (referring to his Canadian nationality) adding that he would not be bothered by the unrest in India for the very reason. A tweet shows Akshay liking a video that mocks the attack on Jamia. However, when checked later, it appears that it has been ‘unliked’. In response to the criticism, Kumar tweeted “Regarding the ‘like’ on the tweet of Jamia Milia students, it was by mistake. I was scrolling and accidentally it must have been pressed and when I realised I immediately unliked it as in no way do I support such acts.”
