Just a few days after he was photographed holding hands with his Palmer co-star Alisha Wainwright, singer and actor Justin Timberlake has issued a detailed statement on the controversy and apologised for a “strong lapse in judgement” on his part.

Timberlake – who is married to fellow actor Jessica Biel and has a four-year-old son named Silas with her – took to Instagram to clarify the rumours of an alleged extra-marital affair, reported The Indian Express. “I stay away from gossip as much as I can but for my family, I feel it is important to address recent rumours that are hurting the people I love,” began the Friends with Benefits star.

“A few weeks ago, I displayed a strong lapse in judgement but let me be clear: nothing happened between me and my co-star. I drank way too much that night and I regret my behaviour,” Timberlake added. “I should have known better.”

He went on to address Biel and their family in the post, publicly apologising to them. “This is not the example I want to set for my son,” Timberlake said. “I apologise to my amazing wife and family for putting them through such an embarrassing situation, and I am focused on being the best husband and father I can be. This was not that.”

Towards the end, Timberlake spoke of how grateful he is to be working on Palmer, an upcoming drama film which follows former high-school football star Eddie Palmer (played by Timberlake) after he returns to his hometown following a prison sentence. As he encounters difficulties from his past upon his arrival, he also finds himself becoming the ward to a young boy who was abandoned by his mother.

The film stars Wainwright, Timberlake and Juno Temple in the lead roles. “I am incredibly proud to be working on Palmer,” Timberlake wrote. “Looking forward to continuing to make this movie and excited for people to see it.”

The former N*Sync band member hasn't starred in a film since Woody Allen's 2017 comedy Wonder Wheel. A release date for Palmer has yet to be announced.
