‘Restoration of student unions was Benazir’s dream’

Pakistan Peoples Party came into existence through student unions, says Agha Siraj Durrani

Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani has said that the restoration of student unions was a dream of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

He gave these remarks while speaking to the media outside the accountability court on Tuesday, after appearing before the court in the assets beyond sources case. The Sindh Assembly speaker said that Pakistan Peoples Party came into existence through student unions.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had advised the authorities to restore student unions and revoke the ban imposed on them.

Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab, while addressing a press conference in Karachi, had stated that students should be allowed to participate in political activities and added that they will soon make a law regarding student unions.


Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan had also tweeted about the restoration of student unions, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari supported the idea of restoring student unions.

Sindh Students' Council, a joint platform of students, had initiated the struggle for restoration of students unions in the province, where they held protests and rallies in different parts of Sindh for the cause.

Later, Youth Action Committee also held a march in Hyderabad to demand repealing of the ban on student unions.
