AKU President Rasul says engaging students, keeping them excited in the class encourage them for their own learning

The Aga Khan University has become the first higher education institution in South Asia to be recognised by Advance HE, a global body that promotes excellence in teaching and learning in higher education.

AKU President Firoz Rasul made the announcement about the university's three-year reaccreditation with Advance HE while addressing the inaugural session of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference in Karachi on Thursday.

Advance HE, based in the United Kingdom, works with higher education institutions across the globe to standardise teaching quality against the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

While talking about the importance of effective teaching and learning methodologies, President Rasul said that engaging students and keeping them excited in the classroom encourage them for their own learning.

The director of the Centre for Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at Western University in Canada, Debra Dawson, addressed the event and stressed on creating a teaching culture that values quality teaching, which can motivate faculty members and create an environment that leads to student success.

Associate vice provost of AKU's Network of Quality, Teaching and Learning and principal fellow of the Higher Education Academy Tashmin Khamis spoke and highlighted how the partnership will benefit the faculty members.

"Our partnership with Advance HE has enabled AKU faculty to access higher education teaching qualifications that are benchmarked against international best practice," she said. "I see Advance HE fellowships as an incentive to transform teaching, as well as an opportunity to reward and recognise faculty for their commitment to teaching," she said.
