KARACHI: Railway Police embroiled in a clash with citizens on Friday, following the launch of an anti-encroachment operation, initiated to remove illegal structures along the track near the railway crossing in Bhains Colony.

According to Landhi Railway Police SHO Abdur Razzaq, the operation was launched to raze the newly constructed houses on the railway land. As police demolished one of the houses and were about to raze another, at the onset of the operation, they were attacked by residents of the area, he said.

"Enraged residents hurled stones at the police as a result of which, a DSP was injured," said Razzaq, who also sustained injuries in the clash. Moreover, the SHO claimed that the residents, in addition to throwing stones, opened fire on police officials.

In retaliation, the police opened aerial firing.

Later, protesting against the aerial firing by the Railway Police, the residents staged a demonstration and blocked a nearby road. Following this, a large contingent of police was called to the site to control the situation.
