SAA proposes replacing ageing water pipelines in Rawalpindi

Chakwal’s Dharabi Lake marked for watersports, tourist attraction

RAWALPINDI: The proposal of replacing worn-out water supply lines across the district has been floated in the Saaf Aab Authority (SAA) meeting on Tuesday.

The project was suggested by MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafiq which was unanimously supported by the committee members. Shafiq has suggested changing old water supply lines in the city before installation of new tube-wells and filtration plants.

Currently, all supply lines within the city areas pass along sewerage lines. Owing to this engineering, fresh water often get contaminated and become a source of lethal diseases.

If the schemes are implemented, it will eliminate leakage in supply lines by 40 percent along with threats of supply of contaminated water.

Further, the Chairman DAA has summoned schemes from seven MNAs and 15 MPAs from garrison city.

The next meeting will be held during next week whereas notices have been issued to related authority for provision of details of ongoing water schemes in the district. Qaiser Shirazi

Five major roads to be repaired

Rawalpindi: Ministry of Local Bodies has approved project of up-gradation of five new roads and storm drain in Rawalpindi.

The main roads in Dhok Ratta, Sardaran, F-block Satellite Town, Farooq-e-Azam and Bhatta Naik Alam will be revamped in the project along with storm drain in Naya Muhalla.

In this regard, Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation (RMC) has released a grant of Rs.500 million. Meanwhile, the ministry has also permitted to utilize amount of Rs.1-2 million which had been deposited in the accounts of Union Councils (UCs) two years ago.

Chakwal to become tourist attraction

The ministry of tourism has started preparations to transform Chakwal into a new tourist destination.

In this regard, tourism authorities are considering Dharabi Lake for promoting motor boats and water scooters. Further, the park besides the lake will be expanded by 78 kanals more and the land for this purpose has already been acquired.

When contacted by The Express Tribune, CM’s Adviser on Tourism Asif Mehmood said that they will include nine destinations in Chakwal which would be restyled while billboards would be erected on prominent points with their history inscribed on them.

Regarding the arrangements on the sites, he added that benches would be installed for people to sit and enjoy scenery around them along with construction of pathways. There will be a separate allocated portion for swimming, he said.  The adviser said that they were preparing documentaries and brochures to educate people about history of area.

Mehmood added that the Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar will inaugurate the project in March next year.

He said that different festivals and events would be organized to increase public interest and asserted that Chakwal will become a focal point for local and international tourists.
