Speakers at a seminar stated that if population growth in the country goes unchecked, it will seriously hamper Pakistan’s socio-economic development and would create issues beyond anyone’s control. They were addressing a seminar titled ‘Population Dynamics in Pakistan: Challenges and Opportunities’ organised by the Punjab University (PU) Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS) on Thursday. ISCS Director Dr Rubeena Zakar stated that if population growth remains uncontrolled, it would have far-reaching consequences on development, environment, health and other sectors in Pakistan. “Investing in women’s education is the best solution for reducing population growth in the country,” she said. She said that future generations could face various challenges, such as unemployment, pollution and overcrowding, because of a rapid increase in population. She added that the aim of the seminar was to sensitise students about these issues and to mobilise them to create awareness in their respective communities. Meanwhile, Punjab Population and Welfare Department Deputy Secretary Ayesha Qureshi clarified popular myths associated with family planning.
