Spider-Man continues to hang in Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige, will produce a Spiderman: Homecoming series, featuring Tom Holland

Entertainment Desk September 28, 2019

It seems that Sony Pictures and Marvel have had a recent patch-up, after which they've discovered  a way to get Spiderman back into business.

The two companies recently announced that Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, will produce the third film in the Spiderman: Homecoming series. The film will feature Tom Holland, reprising his role as the titular hero. The rumor roared this week with hints that the two companies were close to brokering a new agreement, according to Variety.

After the recent announcement of Marvel's Feige pairing up with Lucasfilms' Kathleen Kennedy to make a new Star Wars film, this rumour is bound to entice marvel fans even more. It appears that Marvel's parent company, Disney, has come to  yet another consensus with Sony after aligning Marvel with Kennedy.

The new deal was signed late on Thursday night. The heads from both studios were present during the negotiation, including Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman, Feige and Walt Disney Studios co-chairs Alan Horn and Alan Bergman.

Both Marvel and Disney will receive a 25% profit each, in exchange for lending Feige the producing prowess. Disney is to also retain it's merchandising rights, and Spiderman will also appear in one Marvel Studios film in the future. The film is scheduled to release on July 16, 2021.

In an interview, Fiege said, “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spiderman is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Marvel has licensed the rights to Spiderman to Sony for nearly two decades, an agreement they forged prior to Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of the comics company in 2009.

Spider-Man hangs around in Columbia Pictures' SPIDER-MAN™: HOMECOMING.

“We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans,” said Robert Lawson, chief communications officer for Sony Pictures Entertainment. “We are delighted to be moving forward together.”
