K-P assembly to discuss women inheritance bill

Bill to enable and authorise female muhtasib to carry action against those disenfranchising women from inheritance

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to put check on the practice of depriving women of their due share in the inheritance.

The provincial assembly is going to table a bill in the session on Friday, which will enable and authorise the provincial women mohtasib to carry action against the practice of disenfranchising women from inheritance.

After the bill becomes an Act, the law would authorise provincial mohtasib to act against the complaints of harassing the women at work place and also have the ambit to address the complaints of women deprived of their share in the parents’ property.

The women mohtasib would ask the district administration to take necessary action on receiving a complaint from any woman that she was being deprived of her inheritance.

The deputy commission concerned would be bound to file their reports in the case and would also be asked to issue a relevant directive to get women their due share in any property.

The provincial mohtasib will also have the authority to file a reference in the civil court and the parties could also reach the high court after 45 days after passing the judgments.

In 2012, in an unprecedented move, the K-P Assembly had passed Enforcement of Women Ownership Rights Bill, which sought to ensure the provision of rights for women in the inherited property.
