2013-2018: 13 transgenders killed in K-P

51 murder cases reported in 2019

PESHAWAR: The provincial home department on Tuesday told the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly that a total of 13 people who were transgender had been murdered in the province between 2013 and 2018.

Most of the incidents were reported from the provincial capital of Peshawar where as many as six people who were transgender were murdered.

A further two cases had emerged from each -Nowshera and Swabi. A murder case was reported from each – Kohat and Bannu. Lately, the number of attempts made to murder people who are transgender have been increasing in the province.

The home department further said that some 21 suspects were arrested in 12 cases of murder, including eight who were involved in incidents in Peshawar.

Moreover, the home department’s report stated that as many as 387 murder cases were registered in Peshawar in 2018. In these cases, the police arrested around 900 suspects and submitted charge-sheets against them in the courts.

During this time, just one kidnapping case was registered which was solved while a charge-sheet in the case was also presented in the court.

For 2019, the report said that so far 51 murder cases have been registered in which 170 suspects were arrested. No case of abduction has been registered in the province so far this year.
