Surprisingly, the fire quelled quicker than it had started.
Within a few hours of Rangers taking control of violence-hit areas, without any major resistance, Karachi returned to normalcy on Saturday.
At least three more people were killed, and nearly half a dozen wounded, in separate acts of violence on Saturday but commercial activities resumed in the metropolis and public transport was seen plying on the streets.
With the three latest killings, the death toll of victims from five days of violence rose to 110.
Orangi, which was the starting point of the recent wave of violence, was taken over by the Rangers in an operation lasting a few hours, without firing a single shot.
The miscreants were scared and offered no resistance to the heavy contingent of paramilitary personnel and commandos, explained the Rangers spokesperson Major Bilal.
The residents, however, were not convinced.
“Where did the militants, who killed innocent people for four days at a stretch, disappear?” questioned a resident of Qasba Colony.
“Militants take up positions on the hills, wreak havoc on innocent people for four days while the police and Rangers stay away,” said another resident, wondering if this was all sorcery on the part of militants or the law enforcement agencies. Others were sceptical still. They said the entire episode was a farce.
Sources in the Rangers, however, said they entered the violence-hit areas after receiving a written notification from the government.
“This is the government’s fault. If they had issued the notifications earlier, we would’ve walked in earlier,” the sources said. A top police official, on condition of anonymity, said the Rangers were simply lying low due to its reputation following Sarfaraz Shah’s murder.
They already have the powers to step in along with the police, he said. They did not need a notification, he added.
Who are the detainees?
City police chief Saud Mirza said the police have arrested another 157 suspects across the city.
Sources said that the Rangers have detained nearly two dozen people in Orangi.
Most of the people detained, they claim, were uninvolved in the violence. “All the people the Rangers detained were those returning home once things returned to normal,” claimed a resident. “The detainees do not include the militants that were holed up in the hills,” the resident added.
Rangers spokesperson Major Bilal, however, refuted the charge. “A huge cache of weapons has been recovered from the detained people,” he told The Express Tribune.
The detainees are being interrogated and those found innocent would be released, he said.
Rangers personnel and commandos would remain deployed until a change in orders, he added. Bilal also added that over three dozen trapped families were shifted from Kati Pahari and Qasba Colony to safer locations in armoured personnel carriers.
Operation details
The paramilitary force has taken control of Kati Pahari, Qasba Colony and areas around Orangi Town, said a Sindh Rangers official.
Six wings of the force, including the Rangers’ anti-terrorist wing, participated in the operation to clear the affected areas from miscreants and rescue the trapped families, the official said.
He added that they have contacted the concerned authorities to restore the supply
of water, electricity and other necessities in the affected areas.
Law enforcement agencies have also boosted patrolling and snap checking in the city especially in the violent-hit areas including Orangi, Qasba, Banaras, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Essa Nagri, PIB Colony, Hassan Square, Kharadar and Napier Road.
Killed and injured today
An activist of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was gunned down in PIB Colony close to his residence. The victim, identified as thirty-year-old Waheed Patel, was associated with the MQM Unit 57. He was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where doctors pronounced him dead.
Separately, two people were killed in Orangi Town and Qasba Colony.
Members of MQM’s coordination committee including Dr Farooq Sattar, Wasay Jalil and Syed Mustafa Kamal visited violence-hit areas Saturday night.
He appealed to all political parties of Sindh to dispense their responsibilities for bringing about peace in the city, said Dr Sattar.

@positive pakistani: Yeah. That's a completely reasonable reaction to typos. Chemical imbalance?
@Ishrat Salim: Actually, if it proves anything, it proves that these so called "problems" are truly artificial and created by the complicit agencies to get y'all to beg for them to be solved. Think about it.
Get a life ET..i am sick of your typos...
'.....The victim, identified as thirty-year-old Waheed Patel, was associated with the MQM Unit 57. He was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where doctors pronounced him "death".......' or "dead"....
Pakistan is on life support these days. The seizing of nukes is going to be the last blow and than all plugs will be pulled out.
RIP my country and its much touted ideology. Pakistan was just just an un-natural outcome from the dying British colonial raaj and the opportunity was well grasped by the few. These few will do their best to continue the act until they meet the D day. For this very reason they do keep their travel documents updated and handy ;)
Too bad it happened for all the wrong reasons but better luck next time my poor nations.
This shows that if govt has the will...it can STOP violence in the city...?? how come the Rangers hv takenover " Kati Pahari " without any shot fired...because our poor police is not capable & trained to face such situation.
2) with all due respect...the people of this country is not capable to understand " what is democracy ..?? " ask any person in the street...?? if the govt & the politicians are so obssessed with with " democracy " than why do they not support the LG system...?? because this LG system brings in people from the grass root level to serve their respective mohalla , village & Union. If there was any weakness in the LG system...it could be amended...istead it has been rejected by all the party because the old system is based on selectivity which breeds corruption....ALL politicians choice.Pls review the development thru the old system & thru LG system...our ex foreign minister Mr Qureishi was a Nazim before joining PPP...ask him.
This simply proves that the killings were being done at the behest of someone in power.!!!!!
Its all temporary, we will see the same situation again in some days (hate to say this). They are not serious in finding the permanent solution.
Democracy does not and has not worked in Pakistan. Atleast it is not Pakistan,s time for democracy. Please no more democracy for the sake of Country's existance and people,s safety and for the sake of progress. Pakistan is a unique country where military rule works best due to its strategic location and dangerous neighborhood. No country has the right to criticize or Push Pakistan for democracy like last time. It will come to Pakistan when majority of people are educated and then only the country will be ready. Education will bring stability and political enlightenment and Pakistan will have to wait as long as it takes to achieve that goal. This goal cannot be obstructed under the cloak of democracy as it will bring nothing but corruption, target shooters and misery to the innocent public under a sham democracy. BRING IN THE ARMY UNTIL THE NEXT ELECTION !
Politicians and democracy in action. Where are all those people that constantly moan about dictators usurping people's rights? When dictators are in power people at least have a chance to live their lives. Now our politicians incite their goons to roam around the town shooting people indiscriminately. That includes the PPP. They, not so long ago caused tens of lives to be lost by declaring a strike and then sending out their Lyari goondas to shoot at the curfew breakers. The police and government did nothing.
This has always been a sham democracy and our leaders are inept and corrupt.
I pray we have no more democracy for a very long time.
I fail to understand why these killers are called miscreants? Why cannot they be simply labelled "terrorists". After all, anyone who terrorizes any person, locality, city or even country is simply, by virtue of their deeds should be labelled as such.
what mqm had demanded not happend and now mush sys also scrape now what.............
I always pray to Allah that whosoever did this dirty game may get the returns soon, Insha Allah. See? when operation is conducted, no retaliation was faced from the area, it means they got enough time to move from there, what a pity it is.
The rangers should take permanent control of positions on top of the 'pahari' so that no one can take positions and shoot indiscrimanately at the populace below.
the trade union should go ahead with complete strike till all the services are restored by the government. i for one will keep it closed indefinately till peace is declared all over karachi.
rangers and police should not take part in these operations as their track record is very bad. i suggest common man take up arms till a particular community is declared the winner in this gang war. let the best team win.
Miscreants will be released soon as they belong to different political parties!!
At least make sure that those caught with illegal weapons are sent to jail for max sentence. And since these people have also taken active part in terrorist activities they should go to an ATC court.
The actual result will be visible after the departure of these security personnel from the affected areas. The government has to establish pickets inside and around these affected areas in order to control the menace in future too.
