Even the show runners of HBO's Game of Thrones were surprised after the show received a number of Emmy nominations, reported The Independent.

From the Outstanding Drama Series nomination to Best Writing and Best Directing along with 10 nods for acting, the season secured all the knots. In an interview with Japan’s Star Channel, producer D B Weiss reckoned the honour to be ‘surprising’ suggesting that he did not even expect this in his right mind.

David Benioff and Weiss recently signed a $200 million deal with Netflix for producing exclusive projects after a successful culmination of HBO's most watched series.

The finale accounts for total of 32 Emmy nominations which broke all previous records for a single TV series.

The producer duo also spoke about the criticism they received for rushing the ending of season 8.

“I thought the last season would be the peak, and that we would have ended up with a couple less (nominations) at best,” said the producer as he continued to express his joy. He lauded  his team and the hard work that was put in by each and every one of them.

Both Weiss and Benioff had recently ditched a GOT panel at Comic-Con but finally broke the silence in the interview with cast members Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jame Lannister) and Conleth Hill (Lord Varys) who defended the final season.

However, considering Lena Haedey’s (Cersei Lannister) earlier remark on how the ending may have not justified her character, similar to that of the viewers, some of the cast members had mixed feelings about the finale.

Regardless of the public sentiment shared on various social media platforms, the season’s ending episode became the most watched in HBO’s history.
