NA deputy speaker unmasks New Delhi’s ulterior motives on IOK at South Asian Speakers’ Summit in Maldives

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri successfully presented Pakistan’s case on Indian brutalities in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir despite Indian delegation’s efforts to keep the issue off the agenda at the 4th South Asian Speakers’ Summit, being held in Maldives, on Sunday.

The regional summit on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is jointly organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the People's Majlis in Male' on September 1-2. The conference will be followed by a half-day field visit on Monday.

This was the first occasion when Islamabad and New Delhi came face to face after the latter’s illegal move of abrogating Article 350, revoking Occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5.

The people of the occupied valley have been held hostage under strict curfew and restrictions including a blanket communications blackout for almost a month now.

India’s illegal Kashmir move has brought the two nuclear-armed countries to the brink of confrontation. Prime Minister Imran Khan has requested the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to play its role and vowed to raise the issue at the upcoming UN General Assembly session in New York.

The NA deputy speaker, during his 14-minute-long speech in Maldives, expressed solidarity with Kashmiris in an effective manner despite Indian delegation’s protest aimed at silencing the Pakistani representative.
