BPA leaders Dr Atta Muhammad Nasir and Dr Qutub Sagar, in a press conference at the Quetta Press Club, said that the government must ensure the appointment of qualified pharmacists at the public and private hospitals of the province.
They said that their alliance had been protesting for pharmacists’ fundamental rights including their employment for over six years.
The BPA representatives maintained that during the past 74 days, they had organized hunger strike for four times outside Quetta Press Club.
“During this period, we also held protests in front of the provincial assembly and were given assurances by the chief minister and health minister,” they said.
“However, no announcement was made for the appointment of unemployed pharmacists and pharma students were also deprived of house jobs,” they added.
The BPA leaders lamented that service structure for pharmacists was formulated in other provinces, while Balochistan was not given due consideration for the purpose.
They demanded of the government to take effective measures for the appointment of qualified pharmacists at public hospitals, saying that improper administration of medicines had become a major reason of avoidable deaths.
They further said that student organisations and political and social forums had always supported BPA in achieving its objectives and the alliance still enjoyed their support.
“Negligence and ignorance on part of the government have prompted us to hold protests,” they noted.
“Our demands include the publication of advertisement for the appointment of 600 vacant pharmacists’ posts at various public and private hospitals. We also ask the government to finalise the house jobs and service structure for pharmacists,” they added.
BPA maintained that the sit-in would continue until the government issued a notification for the acceptance of their demands.
