KARACHI: A husband and wife were found dead in their house in Bhangi Para, Railway Colony, near Kala Pul, on Wednesday in the jurisdiction of Frere Town Police Station. The children of the deceased told police that Sharif Masih, 38, son of Inayat Masih, murdered his wife, Erum, 33, and then committed suicide.

Police reached the scene on receiving the complaint and shifted the bodies to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Frere Town Police Acting SHO Vilayat Hussain said that the husband first strangled his wife to death and then hung himself from the ceiling fan. Speaking to The Express Tribune, he said that Erum had married Sharif Masih a month earlier. She had two children from an earlier marriage and the children were eyewitnesses of the crime.

According to the statement given to police by Erum's daughter, Sharif came home late at night, at around 2am, and started fighting with Erum. "He killed our mother by strangling her with a duppatta. He threatened us to keep quiet and forced us to go to sleep. When we woke up the next morning we saw that he had committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan," she said.

According to police, the case is one of domestic violence exacerbated by poverty.
