More than 1,100 employees of eight power sector distribution companies are being trained in computers to help them increase their efficiency. The training in Information Technology (IT), which has been sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), started on Tuesday in the capital.

The programme is expected to help these personnel improve their computer skills and work productively, said a press release. During the course of the training the workforce will be trained using the computers for internal and external communication and shifting from traditional manual systems to computerised and online systems, which will in turn lead to improved efficiency and better customer services.

“Expertise in IT shall not only help power distribution companies staff in performing their jobs in much better but it will benefit customers through speedy processing of their queries,” said Dick Dumford, Chief of Party of USAID Power Distribution Improvement Program, which is conducting the training in collaboration with the Ministry of Power and Water.

“We have a commitment to improve their performance through a range of capacity building trainings. Although important, IT training is only one of them,” he said.

Dumford also announced more such ventures, with training at management level in strategic planning and change management, engineering planning and standards, personnel systems training, customer information system training, business plan and financial modelling, communications and customer outreach, and methods of developing and training personnel.
