JAKARTA:

Pakistan pugilist Arshad Hussain powered his way into the quarter-final of the 21st President’s Cup International Boxing Tournament underway in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The boxer outpunched Bhutan’s Psang Tshering 9-6 in a fiercely-competitive 69-kilogramme pre-quarter bout. Hussain took an early 4-0 lead and while his opponent hit back to make the scoreline 4-2, Hussain remained defensive in the final round and secured his last-eight place with a 9-6 triumph.

“He is a young boxer, appearing in a major international event for the first time,” said coach Ali Bux after the bout.

He added that Hussain might lack international experience, but more practice and exposure in the global arena would hone his natural talent.

The 21-year-old pugilist will take on Taufan Parana of Indonesia today.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Waseem faces Mohamed Hanurdeen of Singapore in the 52-kg category quarter-final in the other match of the day.
