Students’ woes: Three teachers blamed for delaying KU results

Assessments have not been returned to the exam department, claims controller

KARACHI: Karachi University’s (KU) Bachelors of Arts (BA) results have been delayed due to the failure of some varsity and college teachers to return copies of the answer books of degree exams conducted by the varsity’s examination department.

Students who appeared for the exams are worried that they will not be able to enroll in Masters programmes if their results are delayed further.

Despite being given the copies for assessment three months ago, teachers from the Sir Syed Government Girls College, and the Islamic Learning and Political Science departments at KU have not yet handed over copies to the KU examination department, The Express Tribune has learnt.

KU Examinations Controller Dr Arshad Azmi, confirmed there had been a delay and shared that Dr Ahmed Qadri from the KU Political Science Department, Dr Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi from Islamic Learning, and Gul Rana, a Pakistan Studies teacher at Sir Syed Girls College, still have several answer book copies with them, which is thus delaying issuance of the BA results. “Lack of tabulated results is also restricting us from announcing the BA results, which are required by KU’s admissions committee for enrollment into the master’s programmes,” shared the exams controller.

He added that since BCom and BSc examination copies had been fully assessed and tabulated, their results were sent to the admission committee.

Replying to a question, the examination controller said that Dr Qadri had retired when the political science chairperson made him the head examiner for reviewing the examination copies, even though varsity rules say that a retired teacher cannot be appointed as the head examiner.

The examination controller shared that he had also written a letter about the assessment of the copies to Dr Qadri, who is currently serving as the vice-chancellor at Nazeer Hussain University.

However, a teacher associated with the political science department said that Dr Qadri’s appointment as the head examiner was made before his retirement. He said the examination department is responsible for the violation of rule because it was the controller who delayed the exams.

Dr Saima Akhtar, in-charge of the KU admissions committee, informed that the committee has recently sought the degree examination results from the examination department.

Students who fail to obtain results till the posting of the merit list will be facilitated to fill in the claim form, she said. The results of nearly 500 to 600 candidates have been sought from the examination department, while results of the majority of the candidates have already been announced, she added.
