As Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani survived a no-confidence move against him on Thursday, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz demanded to identify and expose the opposition lawmakers who did not vote for their candidate Hasil Bizenjo.

The resolution to move a no-confidence vote against Sanjrani had been passed comfortably by opposition senators, with 64 voting in its favour.

However, the opposition which required 53 of the 64 senators' votes to send Sanjrani packing, fell three short when the results of the secret ballot were announced.

The final vote count was 50 votes in favour of the motion, five votes rejected, and 45 cast against.

This means at least nine opposition senators did not vote for Bizenjo, whereas five of their votes were rejected.

“14 betrayers & backstabbers. Should be identified, named, shamed & sorted out,” she tweeted.

In another tweet she said out of the five cancelled votes, four had "a clear pattern of double stamping, and one stamped squarely between the two candidates”.

The PML-N leader advised the “democrats” to “stay strong” as “this is temporary” and called for another no-confidence motion against the chairman.

'Horse-trading in Riyasat-e-Medina

Party leader Ahsan Iqbal said it was a sad day for democracy in the country as the upper house had “turned into a horse-trading market”.

“Is horse-trading permissible in Riyasat-e-Medina,” he questioned.
