LAHORE: There is a need to understand the basic goals of education and one of the most important is to maintain a sustainable with social values, norms and beliefs, stressed University of Education Vice Chancellor Dr Rauf-i-Azam.

He was delivering a keynote address at a one-day seminar organised by UET in collaboration with University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and Pakistan Institute of Quality Control. The event was attended by renowned educationists and scholars.

Dr Azam said that because the human being is a social animal, it needs a society to live happily with certain principles. This is where education comes in and tells us right from wrong, thus establishing a fair justice system and ensuring character building.

He said a good education system should have relevance with contemporary needs to meet the challenges of the future. The vice chancellor found it unfortunate that the present education system was not relevant to future demands. “So, we need to overhaul it,” he said.

“Another fundamental purpose of education is to create a society where we love to live. Developing the ability to innovate and create new knowledge in order to push the boundaries of human wellbeing is also a basic objective of education,” he added.

Dr Azam said the key to quality assurance in education is student, teacher, institutional and system assessment.
