ISLAMABAD: The government has appointed Rear Admiral (Retired) Syed Hasan Nasir Shah as new chairman of the Port Qasim Authority (PQA).

Initially, names of top five candidates were sent to the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for assessment and ascertaining their suitability in reference to the position.

The names also included Asad Rafi Chandna, who is the existing acting chairman, however, the IB cleared only one name - Syed Hasan Nasir Shah. Officials told The Express Tribune that Chandna’s name was not cleared, though he was holding the charge of acting PQA chairman.

In a meeting held on January 3, 2018, the cabinet had decided to advertise the post of PQA chairman immediately and complete the process in the minimum possible time. Later, in its meeting on January 31, 2019, the cabinet approved terms and conditions and remuneration for the position.

The post was advertised on February 17, 2019 and 94 applications were received in response to the advertisement till March 4. A meeting of the scrutiny committee, headed by the maritime affairs secretary, was held on March 26, after which the committee shortlisted 30 candidates. Following this, interviews were held for the post on June 12 and 13 and seven candidates were selected unanimously by the selection board. Names of top five candidates were sent to the IB, which cleared only one name.
