A 40-year-old shopkeeper from a village in India was arrested on Friday for the murder of two children, reported The Indian Express.

The two beheaded bodies were found buried under the sand and the police reported that only one out of the two severed heads had been recovered.

Families of the victim alleged that the children were killed as human sacrifice.

According to the mother of the girl victim, the five-year-old visited the alleged rapists' shop on Wednesday morning.

“She did not return and we thought that she had gone to a relative’s house. When she did not return the entire day, we started looking,” said the mother.

Police take the rap for minor’s rape, murder

The father of the 10-year-old boy said the accused was friendly and would often borrow his motorcycle. “On Tuesday night, he borrowed my mobile phone as he wanted to speak to his in-laws. However, he did not return it and I asked my son to get it on Wednesday morning."

“The next day I asked the accused whether he returned my mobile to my son. He said yes and then I left. I did not doubt him,” he added.

The local police reported that there was no indication of human sacrifice but it was rather a case of sexual abuse.

The accused admitted that he had the intention of raping the girl when he pulled her in. When the boy arrived, he took both of them back to his house, took their clothes off and molested them.

The parents of the victims refuse to believe that the children were murdered after the abuse. They reported having seen earthen lamps and rice scattered everywhere, as well as a pool of blood and a mound of sand in the backyard.

“Why do all this if it was not a sacrifice? He could have easily buried the body somewhere else,” said the mother of the girl, adamant that the death was a sacrifice.

According to sources familiar with the case, the accused was mentally unstable.
