SIALKOT:

“The eunuch community is disappointed with the federal and provincial budgets for the upcoming year. No funds have been allocated for our welfare. Looking at the budget figures, it appears that eunuchs do not even exist in the country,” said Guru Iqbal alias Reema on Wednesday.

Iqbal was addressing a press conference to register protest against the government’s apathy towards the welfare of her community. She said eunuchs were facing several social problems but the government had failed to take any action to provide relief to them. She said people were reluctant to rent out houses to eunuchs. She added that they could not go to the market with freedom because of the eve-teasers.

Iqbal said due respect should be given to eunuchs and that they should be treated as any other respectable member of the society. “We earn our livings by singing and dancing at weddings ceremonies and other festivities,” she said.

She pressed upon the government to place a special column for the eunuchs in the registration forms for the computerized national identity cards (CNICs). She said there should a quota for eunuchs in all graveyards throughout the country.
