FAISALABAD: A prolonged period of excessively hot weather is here once again and citizens have already begun preparations to adapt and protect themselves from the heat.

The use of sunglasses, caps, headscarves and other protective wear has increased as citizens make an effort to protect themselves from heat related ailments while still remaining fashionable.

A medical practitioner at District Headquarters Hospital, Dr Muzammil, says that the use of sunglasses and other protective wear is a good practice. He termed this purchasing habit as a positive trend. “The use of sunglasses and protective clothing helps protect the eyes and face against excessive sunlight and dust and reduces the chances of suffering a heatstroke.” He added that protecting oneself from excessive heat can also protect a person from possible health hazards such as a sudden heart failure and seasonal diseases. He advised citizens to drink an adequate amount of water during the warm season.

In markets and malls, consumers seem to be more interested in purchasing sunglasses, caps, head covers, water bottles and summer clothing.

Bike riders and pedestrians are the foremost consumers found in markets, searching endlessly for such items. In turn, sellers who are aware of this surge in demand have set up different sale points across the city.

As the weather warms up, the increased interest of consumers in purchasing body covering items adds to the evolving urban fashion of the city. Travelers can be seen wearing stylish, colorful sunglasses while driving. A seller told The Express Tribune that his customers prefer purchasing unique and colorful sunglasses.

These items and accessories are in easy access of their buyers. Sunglasses are easily available for as low as Rs50 and those of better quality can be purchased for Rs300. During the warmers months, motorcyclists face difficulties travelling in the hot weather. A customer buying sunglasses, Tariq, said that the use of some protective clothing and sunglasses helps him protect himself from the heat. He added that he works as an AC technician and he has to fix air-conditioners throughout the day. “It is not feasible for me to rush from one place to another so many times in a day without covering my eyes, my face and my head.”

A stall holder Aslam said, “We set up stalls of sunglasses in all seasons but head covers and caps are added to the list during the summer. He added that the hot weather is a season of golden oppurtunity for sellers, as this is the time for them to increase their income.
