'Vampire Diaries' lovers Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley actually despised each other in real life

The female lead admitted the pair didn't get along

Most fans of the hit fantasy drama The Vampire Diaries loved on-screen couple Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley. But what many people didn't know is that the duo actually hated each other in real life!

The pair, who starred as Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore on the now-concluded CW show, actually "despised" each other in the early days of the show, reported E News.

Nina all but confirmed this while speaking on the latest episode of the Directionally Challenged podcast hosted by her fellow actors Candice King and Kayla Ewell. "Paul and I didn't get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley but I didn't like Paul Wesley."

The starlet went on to discuss how everyone would walk up to her after The Vampire Diaries aired and asked if she was dating Paul in real life because many co-stars thought they had good chemistry. "And we despised each other so much, that it read as love," Nina laughed. "We really just didn't get along the first maybe five months of shooting."

Fortunately, both actors are now in a good place and have become really good friends, as seen in the cute pictures they often post  on social media.

For instance, just last month, Nina shared a picture with Paul on Instagram writing, "Excuse me sir, you look familiar. I feel like we've met before. Maybe in a past life?"

Nina also noted in the podcast that it's "funny" how time changes everything. "I never thought that he would become one of my best friends."

She added, "When you work with anyone, or are spending a lot of time with anyone, little things are gonna annoy you about them."
