ISLAMABAD: The country's civil and military leadership on Wednesday discussed the economic issues and decided to support ongoing efforts towards sustainable and lasting resolution of the country’s financial problems.

It is rare that high powered National Security Committee (NSC), which otherwise focuses on internal and external security situation, discussed the country's economy. The development shows the stakeholders’ concerns about the worsening economic situation. .

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, discussed geo-strategic environment with special reference to recent developments in the region.  It reiterated that Pakistan shall continue all its efforts towards regional peace and stability, said a statement issued by the PM office.

The forum also discussed and fully supported ongoing efforts towards a sustainable and lasting resolution of country’s economic issues. In separate session, the NSC discussed reforms in the Gilgit Baltistan (G-B) region.

Prime Minister Imran Khan directed that the aspirations of people of the G-B especially the youth must be given preeminence during the decision making process.

Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Interior Minister Ijaz Shah, Law Minister Farogh Naseem, Minister for Kashmir Affairs Ali Amin Gandapur, Finance Adviser Dr Hafeez Sheikh and G-B Chief Minister Hafeez-ur-Rehman and the Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan attended the session.

Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat, army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, naval chief Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, air chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, the Inter-Services Intelligence chief Lt Gen Asim Munir, the Inter-Services Public Relations chief Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor and Military Operations DG Maj Gen Nauman Zikria were also present in the moot.
