Pakistan cricket team

Finally, the team has been selected. We now know the 15 who will be representing Pakistan in the 2019 International Cricket Council World Cup in England and Wales. As it is usually the case, the way things unfolded was chaotic to an extent. Some spots are still up for grabs till the conclusion of Pakistan’s ODI series in England.

Before Pakistan’s departure for England, the performance of pacer Mohammad Amir, who was not included in the initial 15-member squad, was under the scanner and people were keen to see how he would fare during the England series. But unfortunately he had to withdraw due to chickenpox. Other bowlers were unable to make their mark, which forced the team management and the selection committee to go back to the experienced bowler though he is now out of form.

Another notable inclusion in the World Cup team is pacer Wahab Riaz, who has not appeared in ODIs for Pakistan since the Champions Trophy in 2017. He is said to have been selected for his good performance in Pakistan Super League and the domestic Pakistan Cup. Interestingly, he was not even part of the 23 probables for the World Cup squad. He was not required to undergo the fitness test. This is something baffling.

Leg-spinner Shadab Khan’s return to the side, after recovering from illness, should be pleasant for a team which relies on the youngster’s ability to take wickets in the middle overs.

A notable exclusion is that of opener Abid Ali. He scored a century on his debut against Australia.

All in all, it is now time for the Pakistan team to buckle up and make the most of the resources at their disposal. They say when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. This is precisely the attitude the Pakistan team will need.
