Iftar party VIP style

It is still unfathomable why Bilawal hosted an iftar-dinner party at Zardari House in Islamabad this past weekend

It is still unfathomable why PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari hosted an iftar-dinner party at the Zardari House in Islamabad this past weekend. Of course, superficially, we know the game. In a juvenile show of prowess, the PPP invited their already well-fed guests to break the fast to project clean intentions in uniting against the PTI. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s assumptions seem true: the former leaders have gathered to unite for a core purpose to pretentiously safeguard democracy. This is a rather daft move considering that most of the VIPs sitting at that iftar table subscribe to and belong to dynastic politics for which democracy is a misnomer.

The Opposition will continue to meet and grunt over difficult decisions taken by the PTI on problems initiated and perpetuated by their own parties when they were formerly in power. The twitterati and others who placed excessive focus on Bilawal’s attention-seeking stunt gave him just what he wanted. He is a lonely millennial amongst fellow party members who are a couple of generations behind in thinking, along with followers who are several decades behind because they have been kept suppressed, desperate and illiterate. Ergo, the PPP and other opposition parties continue to receive blind support and demand attention from various quarters. It is evident that the Opposition is agitated over ongoing financial investigations, being led by the National Accountability Bureau. We can expect them to further disrupt day-to-day country operations following their subtle threats for protests post-Eid.

Prime Minister Khan’s words regarding the event are somewhat plausible, though we cannot agree with them fully. For example, he has vowed to prove that Pakistan will be the fastest growing country in the region. Against the deflating rupee among other obstacles presently faced by the economy, his statements makes one blink and ponder in disbelief. Conversely, however, the VIP dinner hosted by Bilawal was a silly display of elementary school-like politics in which two friends unite to make a third friend jealous of their relationship. Never mind, though — the PM and PTI have serious work to do.
