'Case of girl's kidnapping from DHA poses a challenge for police'

An insider could be involved in the abduction, says SSP Shah

KARACHI: SSP Pir Muhammad Shah, accompanied by Saddar SP Amjad Hayat, shared details of the investigation of two cases at a press conference on Sunday. These include the kidnapping of a girl from outside her home in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and the murder of a police official by armed motorcyclists two and a half months ago.

Kidnapping case
SSP Shah said that an insider could be involved in the kidnapping of Bisma, who was released after her family paid the ransom money. He said that the case posed a challenge for the police, and it was the first case of its kind. While Bisma was returned safely to her home, the case hasn't been solved. He said that the police must conduct a meeting with Bisma's family, who the kidnappers were in contact with through social media, and try to find out what really happened.

He said that because the kidnappers were in contact with Bisma's family, they couldn't be traced soon. The girl's family did not register an FIR, fearing for her life. The police registered the case two days ago, he added.



He said that an insider could be involved in the abduction. The police suspect it could be from her own friends' circle and that she was kept in Karachi only. He said that he felt pity for the kidnappers. Where they would go if they managed to escape, he asked. He said that the kidnappers would soon be exposed.

He said that Bisma's parents must have paid the ransom for her recovery or their daughter would not have been released. He said that the entire police department tried its best to ensure Bisma's recovery, however, they were unable to get information immediately as it takes time.

The SSP lamented that the police are not equipped to respond to such cases swiftly and effectively. He said that the police wanted to increase their capabilities.

Murder of cop
Two armed men riding a motorcycle killed a police official, Jahangir, in the jurisdiction of Hijrat Colony Police Station on March 2 and fled from the scene. The police immediately registered the case and started investigations.
The police arrested an accused, Rehal Gul, 15 days after the incident while another accused escaped to Buner. When the police reached Buner, he fled to Karak and from there to Kohat. The local police in Kohat conducted multiple raids and yet the accused could not be arrested from his hiding place.

Shah further said that the accused, Noor Wali, son of Gul Muhammad, returned after almost two months to Karachi where the Civil Lines Police SHO and his police party arrested him. The murder weapon, a .30 bore pistol, was seized from his possession.

He said that combing operations were under way in the city for the PSL matches at the time and the deceased police official was sent for recce with others. While the other policemen tried to stop the suspicious motorcyclists, they failed. The accused opened fire, killing Jahangir.

He said that the Sindh inspector-general of police (IGP) and the Karachi police chief wanted to use this case to set an example so that the martyred policeman could be provided justice. Shah said that the Sindh IGP has announced Rs100,000 as prize money for the police party.

The arrested suspect is a habitual criminal who has previously spent time in jail and is accused of committing murder during a robbery.
