LAHORE:

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has expressed dismay at a report of armed assault on some Punjab University Philosophy Department students at a boys’ hostel by Islami Jamiat Talaba on Sunday morning.

The commission said such hooliganism should not be tolerated and called upon the university administration and the government to take action against those responsible for the incident.

It also said the Jamaat-i-Islami should take notice of the activities of its student wing. The statement issued on Monday said that the HRCP was concerned over a “pattern of violence and intimidation against teachers and students at the university for which IJT activists have been blamed”.

The HRCP condemned the police for its failure to take prompt action against the attackers despite several calls to its emergency helpline.
