Minister inaugurates Khat Art exhibition at Alhamra

Show includes works of traditional and contemporary calligraphers from across country

In order to promote religious beliefs and culture through art, the Lahore Arts Council organised a calligraphy exhibition at Alhamra Art Gallery on Thursday.

Provincial Minister for Energy Dr Akther Malik inaugurated the Khat Art exhibition and appreciated the efforts of artists. He  said they have managed to give a diverse and unique experience to visitors through their artworks.

At the opening ceremony, Alhamra Executive Director Ather Ali Khan said calligraphy was the most powerful art form to highlight the brilliance of the written word with illumination. This form of art dates back to thousands of years and the creators have managed to bring innovation to their work over the years. He added this was apparent at the exhibition. "Through these exhibitions, Alhamra aspires to bring more opportunities and such platforms to local calligraphers of other cities to get their skills recognised and appreciated."

Khan said a large number of people attended the exhibition and there was a need to ensure that the art reaches the next generation." We plan to hold a calligraphy workshop in the next month to teach our youth the skill of calligraphy."

The exhibition includes the works of traditional and contemporary artists in various styles and scripts. In order to take part in the show, calligraphers were given an opportunity to submit their artworks till May 13. There was no restriction on the size and medium.

Around 280 artworks, submitted by 145 artists, are on display at the exhibition.  The medium of artworks included mixed media, pen and ink, oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, drawings, woodwork, and collage. Artists from Islamabad, Lahore, Sahiwal, Karachi, Jamshoro, Sheikhpura, Faisalabad, Narowal, Okara, Gujrat, Kasur, and Gujranwala participated in the show, which will remain open for the public till May 29.
