ISLAMABAD: The excessive use of polythene bags and their improper disposal can cause lungs cancer, block sewage drains and disrupt the environment. When buried, the bags are absorbed into the soil where they slowly release toxic chemicals. This was disclosed as a National Assembly Standing Committee on Science and Technology convened at the COMSATS University in Islamabad on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by MNA Sajid Mehdi. The committee was also briefed about the working, performance, achievements and issues being faced by COMSATS. The committee urged that a new campus of COMSATS University should be built in the port city of Karachi. However, the committee was told that the matter of acquiring land acquisition was under consideration with the Sindh government.
