Officials are taking special care of chimpanzees, tigers, lions and deer living at the facilities. Officials say that these animals belong to cooler climates and cannot tolerate higher temperatures. The cages have been fitted with air coolers which provide ventilation.
Further, blocks of ice are being placed in the cages and their drinking water is changed regularly. The animals are also being fed vitamins in addition to their regular diet. Moreover, water from overhead sprinklers is also sprayed inside the cages twice a day to keep the temperature down.
On the other hand, the big cats at Lahore Safari Zoo have the freedom to lounge under the shade provided by the trees. Lahore Safari Zoo Deputy Director Shafqat Ali said that when the lions and tigers are in their cages, large blocks of ice are placed inside to keep them cool. Further, large trees have been planted around the cages to provide the animals with relief from direct sunlight.
Similarly, many trees have also been planted outside of aviaries while water is also sprayed to keep temperatures low. Veterinary experts stated that wild animals have an innate ability which can combat changes in the weather. However, the immune systems of caged animals are weaker in comparison. Therefore, effective steps must be taken to save them from the heat.
