Commuting Made Easier: Sialkot gets women’s bus service

SIALKOT: Six buses from Benazir Transport Scheme reached Sialkot on Friday, as part of a government programme geared towards helping women from rural areas have safer access to public transportation. The first caravan from Bajawat to Sialkot was led by Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan. The new service will connect 85 villages in the Sialkot region to the city, allowing women from rural areas to commute safely to the city. The project had been promised by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to the women of Sialkot, many of whom work in the city’s sporting goods industry and need transportation to and from work, during a visit to the city in 2009.
