Mahira Khan hopes for better healthcare for the disabled, elderly

So angry and disappointed, the actor tweeted

For the last few weeks, cases of negligence by doctors and nurses in hospitals across Pakistan have been doing the rounds over social media. These have caught the attention of actor Mahira Khan, who is using her star power to shed light on how the disabled and elderly can be better facilitated at medical institutions.

"I can not understand how doctors offices do not, least of all, have ramps (ideally lifts) for old or disabled people," the Verna starlet tweeted recently. "Two different doctors, same thing. So angry and disappointed."

Mahira's point prompted other local celebs to give their two cents as well. Singer-turned-actor Fakhre Alam thereby shared a video of a show he did with Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy about the difficulties faced by disabled in Pakistan.

"Many years ago, I did a show with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy about this very issue... How we have nothing for differently-abled people. Take a look," he wrote.

And others agreed with Mahira. "This has been a problem since ages but hardly anybody cares. There should be at least ramps for them. We are so insensitive towards them by not giving them equal importance as they are too the part of this society," one user wrote.

"Moreover, on busy roads like Sharah-e-Faisal, there is no zebra crossing and poor and even disabled people have to struggle and sometimes even crawl on bridges to go to the other side of road," another pointed out.

"Ramps shouldn't be only at the doctor's, they should be everywhere including schools and colleges. Been seeing someone suffer because of that for years and it sucks," said one.

Recently, a nine-month old baby named Nishwa became paralysed due to negligence at a hospital in Karachi. The parents of the minor filed a complaint against the hospital administration on Sunday as well.
