KARACHI: A dust storm is caused when hot dry winds come before a big cold front. In Karachi’s case, a moving precipitation system came before the hot winds on Sunday.

According to chief meteorologist Abdul Rasheed, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while at the same time a low-pressure system of winds and rains coming from the West of the country entered Pakistan from Iran. During the intense heat and a proximate rain system, dust from plains and plateaus start to rise and develop into the natural phenomenon of a dust storm.

The storm experienced in Karachi and its adjoining areas, the Met chief explained, developed as the dust settled in plains and plateaus of Pakistan joined the rain-and-wind system coming from the West. Consequently, the dust storm entered the city as well and reduced visibility. It lasted for 15 hours, starting from Sunday evening to Monday afternoon.
