Visually stunning trailer of 'Kalank' leaves fans spellbound

The clip narrates a heart-wrenching tale of love, loss, and longing

The trailer of the much-awaited film Kalank just dropped on all social media outlets and people are losing their minds, rightfully so.

The Abhishek Varman directorial is set to hit theatres on April 17 this year and the overwhelming response to the trailer indicates large box office numbers and commercial success.

The two-minute and eleven-second-long clip packs quite a punch with its stunning visuals and dramatic dialogues while teasing us with its captivating song sequences and megastar presence.


Starring big Bollywood names like Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, and Sanjay Dutt, the trailer narrates a heart-wrenching tale of love, loss and longing, giving us a peak into the intertwined stories of all the characters.

A period drama brought to cinematic life by Karan Johar, Kalank is unlike any other film produced by the Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham film-maker. Some might even go to say that it’s the magnum opus of Johar as it’s a far cry from the modern love stories usually portrayed by him.

Set in 1945, during pre-Partition, Kalank revolves around the age old forbidden love between a Hindu girl and Muslim boy played by Alia and Varun, respectively.

We also get a glimpse into the royal life of the husband-wife duo played by Aditya and Sonakshi. The chemistry between Madhuri and Sanjay’s characters is hard to miss as they seem to be dealing with their own ordeals.

Bearing similarities to Sanjay Leela Bhansali films like Saawariya, Bajiroa Mastani, and Goliyon Ki Rasleela–Ram Leela, some might say that Karan was inspired by the director and wanted to add some Bhansali magic to his own film.

The canoe scene with Alia and Varun, the colourful and coordinated dance sequence in the streets and the selflessness of Sonakshi’s character accepting her husband's (Aditya) marriage to Alia's character; all pay an ode to recent Bhansali films.

Kalank loosely translates to “stigma,” “disgrace,” and “scandal” which is an appropriate name for this film exploring the themes of forbidden romance and the destructive end of star-crossed lovers.

We'll have to wait and see if the movie lives up to its hype and expectations of the fans when it's released in less than two weeks.
