Former CJP Jillani receives International Justice Excellence Award

Jillani says he is 'honoured and humbled'

Former chief justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani on Thursday was awarded the International Justice Excellence Award at The Hague.

While receiving the award, Jillani said he was "honoured and humbled".

"I do not consider this award to my person alone. This award is symbolic of the values and principles that define a judge's odyssey for dispersion of justice. It is an acknowledgement and a reminder that the values that make justice excellence possible are shared across the globe."



"This award is also a testimony to some of the challenges confronted by judges in their pursuit of their sacred mission," he added.



Jillani further added that judges have two major functions to perform in a democracy. "One is to keep the three articles of the state within their bounds ... and two is to enforce the rule of law and fundamental rights in socio-economic culture."

Justice Jillani has received the award for his outstanding contribution to the global elevation of principles of justice in Pakistan and the international community, the International Institute for Justice Excellence said in a press release.

Past awardees include The United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the Right Honourable Lord Harry Woolf of the United Kingdom.

Justice (retd) Jillani served as the 21st Chief Justice of Pakistan from 2013 to 2014. He is currently sitting ad hoc on the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He was also a judge of the Lahore High Court among many other notable achievements
