Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi on Friday said that sanctions regimes should not be used as political tools to advance geopolitical goals, Radio Pakistan reported.

Speaking during a debate in the UN Security Council, Lodhi said the politicisation of the UN’s counter-terrorism machinery would only compromise the integrity of the system.

The Pakistani envoy emphasised upon the need to make these institutions more inclusive of wider membership in their decision-making processes.

According to Maleeha Lodhi, the focus of international attention should be the continuous violence in Indian-occupied Kashmir and Palestine and the oppression of people who are struggling for their legitimate right to self-determination.
