Senate Proceedings: JUI-F defends Haideri’s appointment

Haideri was notified a successor to Senator Waseem Sajjad

ISLAMABAD: The JUI-F on Tuesday contended that the negation of constitutional provisions pertaining to the notification of the opposition leader in the Senate would mar democratic norms as the ruling of the chair was in accordance with the Constitution. “The Senate chairman has given a ruling on the appointment of the opposition leader, therefore, it cannot be changed as it would set a bad precedent,” said Azam Swati, former minister of the JUI-F, as the House resumed the constitutional debate on the appointment of Haideri. Haideri was notified a successor to Senator Waseem Sajjad, who resigned after his party — PML-Q embraced the ruling PPP and joined the federal cabinet.
