Sharifs complain about facing ‘hurdles’ to meet Nawaz

Shehbaz, Maryam worry about former premier’s health, wait for permission to meet him at Kot Lakhpat prison

The leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday protested that the Sharif family was not allowed to look after his ailing brother Nawaz Sharif in Kot Lakhpat prison as per their desires.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president took to Twitter early morning and claimed, “Despite repeated requests, I have been stopped to meet the [incarcerated] former prime minister.”

“My family and I used to meet Nawaz two to three times in a week so that we are aware of his medical condition but now our meetings with him have been reduced to Thursdays only.”

Shehbaz insisted “taking the meeting option away from Nawaz’s mother, sister, brother and daughter is totally unfair.”



The former premier was convicted by an accountability court in the Al Azizia/Hill Metal corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in light of the top court’s Panamagate judgment. He was, however, acquitted in Flagship reference.

Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Harris had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the February 25 order of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which had dismissed his bail petition on medical grounds.

The high court in its order had held that none of the medical reports about Nawaz’s condition suggested his continued incarceration would in any way be detrimental to his life.

According to Nawaz’s daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif, even she was waiting for permission to meet her father.

I am still waiting for the permission to meet MNS. He is unwell & its been 5 days that I have no access to him. Not even his personal physician has been allowed to see him.
